Birth of Decathlon

On 26 July 1976 opened the first Decathlon store, in a commercial area in Englos, near Lille.
A new concept was born, bringing all sports togethers under one roof...
The beginning of a great story.

1st diving products sold at Decathlon

Decathlon was yet to become a sports product designer, but already had diving enthusiasts that referenced products from other brands.
The 1st diving products were included at Decathlon in 1976.

1st Decathlon diving catalogue

Distributed in Decathlon stores, the diving catalogue was the main means of communication for Decathlon Diving.
Even back then, the teams would pose in photo shoots to illustrate the catalogue.

Birth of the Tribord brand

Alongside Quechua, Tribord became the first "Passion Brand" created by Decathlon.
The brand covered all water sports, diving, surfing, swimming, kayaking and sailing.
The brand signature at the time was "J'aime l'eau" ("I love water")

1st product with an exclusive Tribord design

The Wallis 110 mask was the first product 100% designed and thought out by Tribord design teams based at Decathlon headquarters in Villeneuve d'Ascq.
It sold for 35 francs at the time.

1st semi-dry Tribord suit

The OWS 770 wetsuit was created. It was the most technical wetsuit in the range at the time, manufactured on the island of Malta.

Loïc Leferme Tribord technical partner

Tribord worked with Loïc Leferme, multiple world record-holding free diver, on No Limit.
He worked with the Tribord design teams to develop snorkelling products and raise its requirements.
This wonderful project came to a tragic end on 11 April 2007, when Loïc died in a technical accident whilst training for a new record.

Tribord comes to Hendaye

The TRIBORD brand left the North of the France and "relocated" in Hendaye in the Basque Country, using the former fish market building in the port of Hendaye.
The goal was to bring together water sports enthusiasts to design the most suitable products for their sports.
Hendaye was chosen because it is close to the water and spots for diving, surfing, sailing, kayaking...

Tribord at the 6th diving Paris show

For the 1st time, TRIBORD Diving ran a stand at the benchmark diving show in France.
TRIBORD design teams joined the Parisian La Madeleine store for this event, specifically presenting the 1st range of diving bags.

Change of brand signature for Tribord

The brand signature became "Designed by water".
The brand feeds off its proximity to the water to develop more products for enthusiasts...

Loïc Leferme free diving world record

Free diver Loic Leferme became a technical partner for Tribord. He worked with the Tribord team on designing snorkelling products.
In 2004, he beat the world freediving record in no limit category down to -171 meters!

The FLP 500 fins won 3 design awards

1st award-winning TRIBORD product in international design contests.
3 prizes for these fins with a biomorphic design inspired by fish tails: IF product design award, Etoile Observeur du Design and Industrial design excellence award.

1st oursinade in Hendaye

Winter tradition copied from the Marseille TRIBORD team at the time.
Freedivers and spearfishermen from TRIBORD went out to collect sea urchins for all their site colleagues.
This is a fun tradition that is still going strong every winter in Hendaye.

Tribord diving club was set up

The PADI 5 * PlanetOcean diving club moved into the TRIBORD Design Centre premises in Hendaye.
By becoming a technical partner for the brand, it brought very interesting feedback to design teams, participated in product testing, and gave our product managers close contact with every day divers. PlanetOcean has always been a trusted Subea partner.

Creation of the Tribord blue experience

1st customer event organized by the TRIBORD brand.
Initiation pool dives were run in front of Decathlon stores in above-ground pools.
Working with partner diving clubs providing coaching, hundreds of customers discovered the wonder of breathing underwater for the first time.

Tribord helped world divers association

TRIBORD and its technical partner PlanetOcean diving club joined this association in its work by providing equipment. For example in January 2006, 15 young Sri Lankan divers were equipped with diving wetsuits and shorties during the latest assignment in Sri Lanka.

The FLP 700 fins won awards at 2 benchmark international design competitions.
The design of these fins won over the jury of the IF product design award and the ID annual Design Review.

Partnership with the Atelier Bleu CPIE Côte Provençale

The Atelier Bleu CPIE Côte Provençale teaches children respect for the marine environment through diving and snorkelling, running nearly 4,000 underwater activities every year.
The TRIBORD team analyses and identifies young divers' needs.
Subea teams continue working with the Atelier bleu to this day.

The Caribbean 500 set won the Red Dot Design Award

The Caribbean 500 fins, mask and snorkel set won a benchmark international design competition.
This FMS set design impressed the jury of the Red Dot Design Award.

Tribord diving teams worked with Longitude 181 association on protecting the oceans and responsible diving.
The Responsible Diver Charter is included with all Tribord diver travel bags sold in Decathlon stores.

The R'gomoove snorkelling fins won a benchmark international design competition.
Offset blade design impressed the jury of the IF Design award.

TRIBORD began working with DAN Europe (Diver Alert Network) to develop and test technical TRIBORD products, future regulators and BCS.
DAN Europe is a medical and research organization working on diver health and safety.

There was very high demand in this first year on the market; industrial production was not yet optimum and began cautiously.

New tools for design teams, they now have a small pool up to 3.5 meters deep.
The pool has been used almost daily by the teams to test prototypes.
It is also used by some diving school training within our offices.

Starting point for creating the brand, the platform was set up, introducing Decathlon territories and values.

1st Subea brand product

Iconic brand product, the Easybreath snorkeling mask became the first "branded" Subea product.
The TRIBORD brand will gradually be replaced for all diving products.
